Biography
Biography
Michael Jad Azkoul (*1990) lives and works in Geneva. Known by the stage name "Dr Koul", he is active as a rapper, poet, author, martial arts instructor and massage therapist. His most recent production was a book and album entitled "Prophet of Doubt".
Hailing from an international background (Lebanese-American and Anglo-Uruguayan), he has always considered himself a freethinker, passionate about pluridisciplinary approaches to what he perceives as universal themes.
Sometimes political, sometimes philosophical, Dr Koul's music combines "conscious" Hip Hop with jazz and traditional instrumentation, and he is most recognized as being one of the lead vocalists of Captains of the Imagination, a Geneva-based, English-speaking rap group.
Info
Project
Mike Azkoul approached his residency at Eawag from the perspective of his multi-layered practice as rapper, poet, massage therapist and systema instructor.
The broad categories of topics he had identified and presented at Eawag were flow, sampling, and agnostic mysticism.
Over the course of the three months he would visit lectures and labs, attend meetings, participate in field trips and have many one-on-one conversations with researchers - not only at the lab he was based at but from all over Eawag.
The artist offered rap writing classes, massage therapy and weekly systema classes. Deriving from his discussions on water research, the history and philosophy of science and the political dimension of scientific research, he developed ideas for a concept album on a water drop and its journey through the water cycle.
